The Green Card Lottery is one of the ways to immigrate to the US, which fits almost any adult from the post-Soviet countries and Israel. Do this only on the official website of the US Department of State www.dvlottery.state.gov.
Online registration for participation in the Green Card Lottery 2019 (DV 2019) started on October 3, 2017, but ten days after the start of the application process it became known that “for technical reasons” the process had to be stopped and canceled earlier applications. The new deadline for submitting applications for DV 2019 is from October 18 to November 22. The period for determining the results of the lottery has also shifted, now you can check whether you become a green card holder by the registration number of the application for DV 2019 from May 15, 2018, instead of May 2, as it was announced earlier.
ForumDaily collected 5 completely different stories of people who were lucky to win and get the right to live and work in America.
Albina Preuss sits on the shores of the San Francisco Bay, inhaling the salty smell of the ocean. “I fell in love with San Francisco about 7 years ago, when I was here for the first time. Even then I said to myself: I will come here to live. Moreover, at that time I did not have any plans to move, “- she admits.
Albina lived in Moscow and for several years led popular cooking shows on TNT channel “Open Kitchen” and “Two and a half cooks”. Together with co-host and her own newborn daughter, she taught Russians to cook deliciously and correctly.

The questionnaire on the green card Albina filled several times – to no avail. Yes, she especially did not believe that you can just take and win the right to live in the US. She did not win. Oleg’s husband won – on the third attempt. He checked the results of the lottery twice: immediately after the results were announced, the system showed that he had not been selected, when he checked again a few months later, he read the cherished words about the win.
“To be honest, I did not really want to leave, I was scared. I’m a talker, and in Russia I can normalize myself using the language. And I do not have much English. I was afraid how I would talk here. In this case, I always dreamed of living by the ocean. Therefore, I decided: there will be a contract with TNT for the next season – I will stay in Moscow, I will not – I will leave. And we did not have a contract, “recalls Albina.
According to her confession, the departure is in no way connected with the political and economic situation in Russia: “Until the moment I left, personally I and people in my environment had no problems. Well, yes, there is no cheese or it costs more. But not in the cheese is happiness. ”
Next, the family collected the necessary documents and was interviewed. “In the interview, we were three of us – I, husband and child. Rhona was sitting on my knees. The officer did not ask me a word, I did not answer the whole interview. My husband was asked: what would he like to do here and why he wants to come to America. There was not a tricky question. All in general passed very quickly, “- says the girl.
The interview was successful. In Moscow they were given immigrant visas to their passport, and when they arrived in California six months later, they received a green card. Now Albina lives in San Francisco, on the Pacific coast.
“I have a lot of difficulties here, but still it’s good for me. I, for the joy of myself, very easily refused what I had in Moscow. Yes, I was pleased that at the crossroads I was approached and said: “Oh, it’s you, Albina from the program” Two and a half cooks! ” I really liked it. I liked that we were invited everywhere, we were all wanted. Nobody here wants it, but it’s not bad either – I have time to think about what I want, “she says.
Albina is now learning English in college and is trying to find a job in order to tighten the conversation in this way. At home, she conducted culinary master classes and now wants to find a job in the kitchen. It was not easy.

“I feel myself an idiot every day. I have difficulties with the language, and I want to practice it at work. Moreover, I am ready to go to almost any job that I will be taken to. All last week I have telephone interviews. It’s hell to talk on the phone in English. I do not understand the questions that are asked of me. People just hang up. So while these interviews did not end “, – admits Albina. But she does not let her hands down – next week she has new interviews planned.
Maxim Glubochansky-Grushikhin moved from Israel to the United States in 2013. A year before, on the third attempt, he won a green card. 30-year-old Max is twice an immigrant. At the age of seven, he and his family left Ukraine for Israel. In Haifa he received an economic education, 3 years served in the army. Green card won from Ukraine, because the main thing for the lottery – the birthplace. And, at first, as in the case of Albina’s husband, the system showed a negative result first, and a few days later it was positive.
Since Max was living in Israel at the time of applying for a green card, the interview was held at the US Embassy in Jerusalem. He learned about the win in May, and he was scheduled for February. For the interview, Maxim brought an extract from the bank account (the more money there is, the better), the birth certificate, the higher education document, and a letter from the American sponsor (in the case of Maxim, it was a relative) in which he took over obligations to help a newcomer if necessary.
You could take an interpreter to the interview, but Maxim decided to answer all the questions in English himself – he taught the language from the age of 7. “The interview looked like this: I went to the counter behind the glass, we did not even sit down. For about 15 minutes, the consular officer asked me where I lived, where I studied, was born, where I was going to stop at the first time in America, asked me to show the documents, and I was not even interested in what I was going to do after moving to the US, “says Maxim .
Maxim Glubochansky-Grushikhin, thanks to the move to the US, began to earn much more. Photos from personal archive.
He left his passport at the embassy, and two weeks later he was returned with an immigration visa. In less than 2 months, Maxim flew to California. At the airport on arrival, he was asked the address where to send him a green card, and two weeks later she was at Maxim’s hands.
Now Max lives and works in the Silicon Valley. “After moving to the Valley, I realized that you need to do IT, and went to study for a tester. After a month of training I got a job in San Francisco. At the first job I received $ 9 an hour, but after 3 months I got a job in another company at $ 35 per hour. Then I found a job tester with an annual salary of $ 90,000 – this is $ 45 per hour plus bonuses. True, about 30% of the salary goes to taxes. I’m testing the functionality of video players. This specialty can be learned in a month of training, “- Max admits.
“It’s good where we are not, but we are everywhere,” Maxim says with a laugh, asking why he decided to leave. – I love Israel very much, it’s good to live there. And there, frankly, it’s much safer than in San Francisco. The only thing that bothered me was that everything is predictable, everyone earns from $ 1.5 to $ 3 thousand a month. After coming here I quickly went to the money that in Israel could not earn. There are such salaries, as now I have, for example, very steep doctors. It’s nice that the US allows you to realize your potential. ”
Nadia and Valery Savchenko from Ukraine won a green card last year. Both – for 55 years. An application for a green card on their behalf was filed by a daughter who already lives in the US. From the first time Valery won.
The family in the homeland for more than 20 years was engaged in business – owned a store of women’s clothing. Valery, in addition, did the repair of housing. One of the main fears of Hope, associated with the move – ignorance of the English language. Although she practically independently learned Polish, while 23 years went to the goods to Poland.
Preparing for the interview, the couple’s documents collected even more than required. Including, the daughter wrote a financial commitment to materially support them in the United States if necessary.
According to Nadezhda Savchenko, the interview took place in Russian and lasted less than 5 minutes. They asked only a few questions – how they learned about the green card and how their daughter came to America. At the same time, the couple were not even asked if they spoke English.
Alexandra Stepanova, along with her then-future husband, Ilya, applied for a green card from America. They came from Russia together: Alexander on a student visa, Ilya – on a working one, he’s a programmer. Lived in Boston about 2.5 years, when they found out that Ilya won a green card on the third attempt. This was in 2011. After that, the young people immediately got married and applied for an immigrant visa.

“In the lottery, we were given a rather high number – somewhere around 30,000. We were afraid that we would not have time to go through all the procedures until October 1, because after this date our win would have burnt out. But, thank God, we had time, “- says Alexander.
After a while, the couple moved to California. The interviews took place at the office of the US Citizenship and Immigration Service in San Jose. The spouses were thrown questions.
“The interview paid much attention to our marriage, because they thought that it was fictitious. We did get married after the win. That’s why everybody asked: where did we go to rest together, how many people live in our apartment, do we know each other’s parents, etc. But we met 10 years before marriage, so we answered all questions calmly, “Alexandra recalls.
As a result, the couple received a green card, and now lives happily in California and brings up a child.
Pavel and Katya Kilivnik are citizens of Latvia, but at the time of submission of the questionnaire for the 2015 lottery, they lived in Ireland. The couple filled out their application and completely forgot about it. The results of the lottery-2015 were published on May 1, 2014, and they rushed to check the results only in September.
“After reading You have randomly selected [You were randomly selected], you did not believe your eyes,” Katya recalls. – On the one hand, we were very happy, and on the other – were scared that we lost a lot of time. The next day they called the consular center in Kentucky, and we were confirmed that we still have time to fill out questionnaires for three members of the family. ”
The family waited for the interview for 8 months. The interview took place in Dublin.
“We were super-prepared, but still very worried, because the outcome of the interview depended on whether they would give us a visa or not. As it turned out, they were worried in vain, since visas were received without problems. In addition to the usual questions on study and work, they asked only where we plan to live and work. That’s all! We, happy and happy, after waiting from the embassy passport with visas, immediately booked tickets to San Francisco at one end, “- recalls Katya.
The family received a green card 3 weeks after entering the US. My husband was transferred to the San Francisco office of the IT company in which he worked, and for the arrangement they allocated a flat for 2 weeks in the Silicon Valley. During this time, the family received a social security number and rented a house in a small town near San Francisco.
“My husband in the early 2000s already lived in America for a couple of years, so he now feels like a fish in the water. And I’m still in a state of euphoria, “laughs Katya.
The green card gives almost the same rights as American citizenship. The difference is that the owners of green cards can not take part in elections. Photo: vivastravel.ru.
